The Whelan Lab Welcomes Two Undergraduate Researchers.

We are happy to welcome Christine DeRosa and Cecilia Leber, our newest undergraduate researchers, to the Whelan Lab.  They have already begun working in the lab and make a great addition to our group!

Simon Presents his Work at MUACC.
Our very own Simon Weaver spent the weekend in Columbus, OH at MUACC presenting his research.  We are proud of his exciting research on using an OER for coding in an Analytical Chemistry course!!  Check out his poster here.

Dr. Whelan Delivers a Seminar at the University of Kansas.
On September 24, Rebecca delivered a seminar at the University of Kansas on our group's ongoing efforts to understand MUC16 and make it a more useful biomarker. This was her first in-person seminar since the pandemic. Thanks to Professor Mike Johnson for the invitation to present our work!

Simon is Awarded a CBBI Fellowship!
Simon is rapidly adding to his accolades as he has been awarded a CBBI Fellowship!  He becomes the second member of the Whelan Lab to receive this fellowship.  Naviya has also had her CBBI Fellowship renewed.  Congrats to both of these awesome members of the Whelan Lab!!

Simon Wastes No Time With His First Publication!
He may be the newest member of the Whelan Lab but that hasn't stopped Simon from publishing his first paper!  Simon's paper "Characterization of DNA aptamer–protein binding using fluorescence anisotropy assays in low-volume, high-efficiency plates" has been accepted as a technical note in Analytical Methods. Congratulations to Simon for setting the record of shortest time in the lab before publishing!!

Lisa is Awarded a Fellowship!
Lisa was selected to receive a 2020-2021 Berry Family Foundation Fellowship. Awarded through Notre Dame Advanced Diagnostics & Therapeutics, this fellowship will fully support Lisa's graduate training for one calendar year. Lisa's proposed project was "Exploring the Utility of Polyclonal Aptamers for Early Stage Ovarian Cancer Detection."

And the CBBI Fellowship goes to... Naviya!
​Naviya Schuster-Little has been selected as a 2020 Chemistry-Biochemistry-Biology Interface (CBBI) fellow. This NIH-funded training grant will support Naviya for her work in proteomics and aptamer selection, including intensive training in the lab of our collaborator Manish Patankar in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. Congratulations, Naviya!!

​The Center for Bioanalytic Metrology--a National Science Foundation Industry-University Cooperative Research Center--has funded our project "Generating Polyclonal Aptamers for Recognition of Multiple Bacterial Species." Once the lab reopens, we are excited to move this project forward!​

The Whelan Lab has its First Publication
The Whelan Lab has published its first paper from the University of Notre Dame.  The paper, ​Developing a mass spectrometry–based assay for the ovarian cancer biomarker CA125 (MUC16) using suspension trapping (STrap), can be found in Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry.  Please stop by our "Publications" page for a link to the paper.

​​The Whelan lab has had a very exciting and productive first year at Notre Dame.  Today is the first anniversary of Naviya and Susan joining the lab.  We are grateful for all of their hard work in the first year to get us where we are!! Cheers to another year!!

​IITP Fellowship Awarded to Nicole!

Our very own Nicole was awarded an Interdisciplinary Interface Training Program (IITP) Fellowship from the Walther Cancer Foundation at Harper Cancer Research Institute.  Only three people are awarded this fellowship annually to fund their cancer research projects for two years.

AD&T Proposal Funded!
​An AD&T proposal co-authored by Dr. Whelan, Dr. Camden, and Dr. Jenkins was awarded funding!  We are super excited to move forward with the project  "N-Heterocyclic Carbene Functionalized Nanoparticles as a Platform for Precision Medicine: Aptamer-Mediated Detection of Ovarian Cancer Biomarkers".  Congratulations to all!     August 1, 2019

Three of the Whelan Lab's best and brightest are attending Mass Spec Summer School this week in Madison, Wisconsin.  Naviya, Sergio, and Nicole are soaking up the knowledge to bring back to the lab.  Naviya is also bringing back an award for best tweet!  The rest of the Whelan Lab is eagerly awaiting their return...     July 23, 2019​​​

Congratulations are in order for our very own Vincent Schmitz!!  Vincent was awarded the Berry Family Foundation Graduate Fellowship in Advanced Diagnostics & Therapeutics for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Oxytocin Project Funding!
“Aptamer technology in low resource settings: solving the problem of bad quality oxytocin” has been selected for funding by the panel of judges of the Disease Diagnostics INventors Challenge!!  Vincent and Kat presented a proposed research collaboration between the Whelan and Lieberman Labs which won third place and secured funding.  Congrats to all involved! May 2019
Naviya wins a Harper Cancer Research Day award!!!
Naviya and Vincent represented the Whelan lab and presented posters at the 8th annual Harper Cancer Research Institute Cancer Research Day.  Naviya won an award tying for first place in the post-doc/staff category!  Congrats Naviya!!  April 8, 2019
